Final Cut.

Here is the final cut of my film product that me and my group produced.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XcqJoy-Z3Q

When I tried to upload the film, it didn't do it successfully and Blogger wouldn't allow it to upload. Because this happened, I therefore have copy and pasted the link of my video from Youtube, this is my final piece and is a full edited film beginning.  So the film is the link here in this post.

Evaluation-Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task) What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product.

From the beginning of this project, the first task we were set, was to do some preliminary work. From this preliminary work, it helped get used to the equipment and understand how to use the equipment correctly.
This is the camera that was used to collect all footage to film our product. it took time getting used to the camera, but once we had time to use it more and more, it got a lot simpler than at first.

This is thr tri-pod we used to help snap some of the shots. It helped take still shots and also slowmovement shots. The height of the tri-pod can increase and decrease, also the bit where the camera attaches also increases and decreases it its height.

After the preliminary work, we had to put ourselves in our groups and decide roles that people had to do. we had to decide who would do planning and organising and getting props etc. Once we had decided this, throughout the project, I wasn't getting along with my group members and it was causing arguments and I just couldn't communicate with them at all. So luckily enough I was able to join another group and they were kind enough to let me help and participate in their final project. By the time I had joined this group, all the filming had been retrieved and they had already begun on their filming. Once I had joined this group, all the roles of what to do had been already decided, so therefore, they then told me I could be co-producer. Laura, was the producer of everything and Nicloe was Director. I got to partcipate by helping to edit the film and from this, I found out key skills whilst editing, I learnt how to fade shots into other shots, cross-fading this is called. Also I learnt how to speed up footage and also decrease the pace of the footage. I also learnt how to do other features such as add music to footage, so overall I have learnt a lot from the editing part of the film and its a new experience I plan to use in the future.
From our film, we have made, it is possible to be continued and if we had the time and budget to do so, we would of. It is capable of making the rest of the film. It starts with someone being murdered and then eventually the killer would be revealed.
So overall, this project has been a difficult task to do. I have learnt many key skills, I have learnt a lot with the technology I would of never knew how to do, I hope to do something similar to this in work to come.

Evaluation-What have you learnt about Technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Throughout this project I have learnt a varied number amount of uses to this project.
I have learnt how to edit films, by using the computer facilities to do this.
This is the computer where all the editing took place.

I have also learnt how to upload stuff to Youtube, it has helped and from now on, I can get more feedback on my work. T
This is the sight I used to upload my work.
Also, facebook, I have learnt to use the technology on there by uploading my work.

We have learnt how to use and operate a Digital Video Camera. By this I mean that we have learnt what each button does and how we could use them in our film. The on which we probably used the most besides the obvious play fast forward and re-wind was the zoom toggle. At first on out preliminary shooting exercise we created a 'Tromboning' effect but soon fixed this by practicing before we shot the real thing. We also learnt how to connect the camera up to the computer, via USB. The Diagrams which we researched and labelled during our research really helped us get to grips with the technology and allowed us to feel more confident with it.
Also since starting this project, I have learned how to use a Blog. I now have better use of using one and therefore it will help me in the future if I have to do one. It helps me keep on top of my work and also, lets me keep in contact with wat other people are up to. It has been a great thing to use and may help in further work to come.
The Adobe Premier Pro software is also something which I and other group members were unfamiliar with. I still find it quite difficult to used when you are trying to do something new, find a button or try an new effect because there are so many options, but when doing the basics it is relatively simple and exciting to watch back and see what you have created. By Researching about adobe premiere it helped us because some groups just threw themselves in at the deep end and were baffled about how to edit their film whereas we new little about the basics and understood what some of the buttons did.

Evaluation-How did you attract/address your audience?

Once we had decided and established that our film was targeted at teenagers, in order to help address and attract them to watching our film, we had to do some of the following to do this:
  • In the film, we had to make sure that locations were what teenagers recognised
  • The characters in the film we had to make sure they suited roughly the same age as the teenagers wanting to watch the film
  • Also in the film, the characters would wear up to date clothing, this is to show that it's not set in the past and that they won't lose interest of the film
  • In the film, there is use of a mobile phone, this is technology today that teenagers use daily
  • It also shows in the film the girl putting listick on before she goes out, this is a typical thing teenage girls do before they go out
  • Girl character wearing jewellery, something the audience may have in common
Also to help attract audience to watch our film on the genre horror, we had to show some of the conventions that relate to the genre. In the film we use a 'knife' this is a typical convention that is obtained in horror films, therefore the 'knife' shows affect, they are also typical weapons used when someone is murdered, 'Scream' is a good example of this. Also in the film, to show conventions that makes it relate to horror, the style of music in the background used, it was weary music which kept you thinking and it sounded like something traumatic was going to happen, however the audience was waiting and didn't know. Also there is a killing in the film production we have made, this is intendly meant to happen in a typical horror film, this shows more of the conventions and helps relate our film production to horror.

To publish the film to the audience I uploaded the film to Facebook and Youtube. I also told people about the film and also showed people, however I do not have the feedback on just showing people the film, however, I do have some feedback which let on to the audience.

Youtube

Here is the feedback from Youtube. I uploaded the video and since the upload, unfortunately it only got 18 views, no comments were left but this was the only information from Youtube I obtained.

Here is the feedback from Facebook. As you can see, there has been 45 likes which suggests that people have watched and liked the film. This shows positive results on the film. Also, the film has had comments left, it has a range of different comments, therefore feedback from people have been left and we have their views of the film.

From the amount of views obtained on both uploadings, it showed that people (mainly teenagers) were interested in watching the production we had made. From the comments given back on facebook, it helped me and my group know what problems there could of been and therefore if we had to go back and adjust the film. So all the feedback given was very helpful.

Evaluation-Who would be the audience for your media product?

From the media production we have produced, the typical audience for this would be mainly teenages aged 15 and above.
The reasons for this is because it is teenagers that are acting in the production. Also, the film is about a boy that cheats on his girlfriend, so teenagers 15 and above would like to watch and be a suitable view for our film. They would be interested because they'd like to find out what happens in a cheaters film. The film production is for anyone above the ages of 15, however the main attraction for the audiences is teenagers from 15. This would be the typical audience for the film.

This is a teenage girl, she is called Chloe Berry, she is 17 years old and I and my group think she is the typical kind of audience for our film project.

Chloe is a girl who keeps up in the latest trends, shops at the latest fashion stores such as New Look, River Island and Topshop. She enjoys listening to a varied range of music, anything from Rock to Pop music.

She enjoys her social life with her friends, she enjoys going swimming, bowling, cinema and when she goes to the cinema she goes to watch horror films, she usually watches the latest horror film out. She likes films like 'Scream', 'Saw' and 'Paranormal Activity', she went to see the recent Paranormal Activity 2. As she likes Scream and some of these other choices of films, I am sure she would really like the film project we have produced as she is very much in to watching horror films and ours fits in to this genre that she likes.

Evaluation-What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A media institution is a company that will distribute someone's film. Universal, Working Title, Warp and 20th Century Fox are all examples of companies around.
The studio/company I think my film production would fit into would be Warp. I think it would fit into Warp because the film we have produced is not a high budget and it is a very low budget film. Therefore it would fit best with the Warp Studio. Also I would recommend our film production to be in the Warp company because the film we have produced is a little gritty. It's not going to be the most successful film therefore it would fit into one of the lower companies, however, companies like Universal, where they are far more successful and they make their films out more world wide to the public and therefore they have bigger success, however they can afford to do this, therefore they can spend more money on their films and publish it to a wider range, therefore this is why big film companies make better films, which leads to more profit, therefore our film production would not be as successful in this company. Theres not enough effects to make the film of high standards etc. So therefore, I would choose Warp Studio other than any other studio company.

Examples of Warp Films
  • Four Lions
  • This Is England
  • Hush
  • Paradise Lost
  • Submarine
These 5 films are all Warp Films, out of these 5 films I have only heard of two of them (Four Lions, This Is England) the others I haven't heard of. This goes to show that these kind of films from this company are not big named films and not everyone knows about them, they are typical standard films and don't really bring in any great profit, some may do so, some might equal the budget they spent on making the film. Warp isn't the best of companies and this is why I think our film production(Infidelity) would fit into this film industry company.

Evaluation- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In this production, the genre is horror and the main story line in the film is the fact that a boy has cheated on his girlfriend. So what was decided to do is a typical cheating based horror. As most young people are most commonly known to cheat. This film is casted by 17-19 year olds. Therefore, this must attract teenagers of this age to watch the opening of this film we have produced.
This film is to help show that being a teenager is just like the adult life, even though they are still young, they have to deal with adult situations at a young age, is this showing that teenagers are growing up too fast and are having to make decisions early on in life. However, there is no importance shown to this as they are still young.
Melissa who plays the killer, doesn't like cheats, therefore she fits into the part of the killer. Also, Laura has experienced being cheated on, therefore it makes it easier for her to understand her part in the film, a lot easier to play. From the actors/actresses who played the parts, having them having the same views and similarities to this storyline,it helps play the parts correct.
Also in this production, it is a girl that gets cheated on by her boyfriend and her heart is broken, this is a typical thing to real life that the boy has cheated on his girlfriend. It is more likely a boy to cheat than a girl. Therefore we have made a girl be cheated on in our film production.

In horror/slasher movies you intend to start the film with a typical girl at the start, for example 'Scream' a 'Real' media institution has at the beginning of the film a girl is home alone, also the girl is a teenager. 'Scream' represents teenage girls to be useless and clumsy, whereas in our production, we wanted the girl not to be this and we wanted her to be the opposite from this where she can be able to defend herself. 'Scream' itself was released in 1996 whereas to our film production it is released in 2011, from then to now we wanted to show that women can go from being clumsy and defenceless in a horror film, to being able to defend themselves and be a lot stronger.

Evaluation- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The title of the film is introduced at the end of the footage we have put together. The font of the writing of the title is made to show some kind of conotation to the horror genre which our film product represents. Many horror films have the title in their film with font that has some kind of connotation to the genre horror.

Setting/Location

The main setting/location of the film is in the Forrest. The reason why this location was chosen is because it creates the atmosphere as the forrest can be seen as creepy etc. This helps build the tension as you are watching the film and it indicates to the audience that something could happen. There could of been other locations used to help fit into the genre that we are obtaining. However, the Forrest is something not commonly used for horror films and therefore it gives the audience a different prospective of what horror films can be made like.

Costumes and Props

Every film has costumes and porps, therefore this is a typical media convention. In our product, you can see that there is a 'cheatboard' this is what is used to show that Melissa (The girl that gets cheated on) has been stalking her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend. Also, their is knifes used, this shows some of the conotations and mise-en-scene, this shows weapons, typical weapons that appear in a horror film. The actors are dressed in casual clothes. They are dressed in casual clothes to show that they are just normal casual people, like a real life person. This isn't really a costume, its just the casual day look, however, still acts as a costume.

Camerawork and editing

In this product we have made a few different range of shots, close-ups, mid-shots etc. When editing the footage, we fade some of the shots into other shots, this creates the effects and also shows our editing techniques. Shots like these are used in a real film, so we took some ideas when watching films on our research and decided to use them to make it affective. The fading shots shows the use of our editing and also you can see the the different range of shots used throughout the film. (will be posted on as a later date)

Story and How the opening sets it up

In the film production, it is about where a girl gets cheated on by her boyfriend and then the girl that gets cheated on, she stalks her ex-boyfriend(the one that cheated on her) and his girlfriend, then the girl goes on to kill the new girlfriend to get revenge. The opening sets this up as it begins with the cheatboard, this shows all the stalking the girl has done to her ex-boyfriend and new girlfriend, then it goes to shots of her getting ready to go out and find them, so therefore, the cheatboard shows who the main characters are throughout the opening.

Genre and How the opening suggests it

The genre of the film production we have made is horror. In the opening of the film, you can tell that the genre is horror, as the music of the film is a creepy music and is a conotation to the genre horror. Also in the film opening, you see knifes, this is a typical prop in a horror film and therefore suggests that the film has something to do with horror.

How characters are introduced

In the film production all the characters are introduced seemingly. At the beginning of theproduction, the new girlfriend and the ex-boyfriend are introduced on the cheatboard, this is because they are the main characters to the beginning, then seconds after they are introduced, so is the girl that got cheated on. All the characters are introduced fairly quick to the film, this is so the audience can get quick views of every character in the production.

Special Fx

We didn't really use any special fx. We made the whole film in black and white, which is just an effect. Green screen can help to make special fx, but we didn't really have any real good effects in our final production. Special fx effects would be most commonly used in scifi and action films etc.

Editing-Coming to an end.

From all the footage that has been captured, we have finally edited the footage and alsmost completed our final project. Here is some more edited footage:

This is Melissa-(Killer) Here, you can see on the left is the non-edited shot of her putting the lipstick on, however to the right of that is the final edited shot of it, it is in black in white, this is to create the tension. Also in this shot, it is a close up to show the gender of the girl and also, whilst this shot is playing in the film, as she is putting on the lipstick, it is in slow motion, this builds the tension and creates the atmosphere.

Here is another screen grab from the editing we have done. On the left of the picture is the first shot of the dead body, however on the right side of the picture is the edited shot and is the final piece that will be included in the film. As you can see it is in black and white, this is throughout all the film and keeps tension going all the way. As you can see, the word 'Destroyed' is in the background of the dead body, this shows that the word represents what the dead body is, its destroyed, the girl is dead and this goes along with the conventions of the shot.

Filming/Editing.

Here is some of the footage from the middle of the fil. Before and after editing, as you can see we have changed the colour to black and white and shortened the clips. We have done this to create a tension building effect.

Equipment.

These are pictures to show the equipment we have been using througout our Media Coursework Project.

This is the keyboard we use to help edit pieces of footage we have filmed. This is different to a normal keyboard and it is our first time experiencing one of these kinds.

This is the computer we have been using to edit all the footage we have filmed. All our project is on this compuer and it has been our first time using these, so we have no experience at all. It takes time to get used to, but we manage in the end to get used to it.
This is the camcorder we used to film all of our footage with for the opening to the film we are making.

Storyboard

Storyboards

This is storyboard one. It describes the initial setting of the house.

This is the second storyboard. This is where she is placing and choosing what weapon she shall put in her bag.

This is the third storyboard. This shows the shot of the boy with his new girlfriend, also shows a weapon with blood. (future shot)

This is the fourth shot and you see the ex-girlfriend walking and seeing her ex-boyfriend with his new girlfriend.

This is the fifth storyboard. You see the ex-girlfriend destroying the shine and scribbling on the new girlfriends face with red lip stick.

This is the sixth storyboard. As you can vaguely see it says 'extrashots which we need to include' therefore we have placed some establishing shots and the extra narrative of the hospital which branches off.

This is the final storyboard. It shows some close-up shots of the shrine and also the title of the film.

Storyboard-The making of them

This is a template of the storyboards that was used to create the real storyboards.
The box is where the picture would be drawn and this would show a brief outline of what the shot will look like.
The lines are there so we can write up the explanation of the shot and also the use of mise-en-scene used in the shot.
Also, the little square is for the shot number.

Once the storyboard has been put together, it is more than likely that the storyboard will fit exact to the film we produce.

Final Plot

As I joined this group later on throughout the project, this is the final plot idea they have decided to gone with.

They agreed to initially go with Idea A. However, when they realised to do this, it was far to complex and complicated therefore they tweeked the main idea and decided to change the initial idea.

This is how the film will be overall: There is a girl and boy that used to be a couple, the boy cheated on the girl and now has a new girlfriend. The 'ex' girlfriend therefore went and stalked her ex boyfriend with his new girlfriend, taking pictures etc of them and therefore from this made a collage of them and therefore from this, plans to plot to go out and kill them.

They are ranked in the order of the favourite and the one which we are probably going to attempt, idea A being the best. However these ideas are not set in stone and we will probably develop, change or elaborate on them when drawing up story boards and even in film production.  I shall post the ideas as separate blogs therefore you have a clearer view on each idea.

Group Change

Throughout my AS Meida Coursework, I have now changed groups and joined someone elses group.
They emerged an idea before I joined and the idea is:

Visual Style:
Happy Times, in Colour. Bad Times, in Black and White and eerie.

Characters:
Myra, physcho killer. (Melissa Little)
Lucy, lady cheat,seductive. (Laura Whittaker)
Tony, Cheating  boyfriend. (Joey Moore)

Location:
Nicole's House + (The Delph Fields)- Nightime
Towneley Park, Daytime.

From this idea, they have already filmed all the footage needed. Also, they have already started to edit the footaged gathered, therefore I will have missed out on some valuable information and lose certain pieces of information to add to my blog.

.....

Throughout the past week, me and the rest of my group could not come to terms with a greeing with a final idea to do in the project. Therefore, the filming has taken a while to start on doing and not really a lot of footage has been captured.
Throughout this group project, it had led to me falling out with following group members, Therefore there won't be enough/ a lot of information to go off from what I had been doing.

Media Studies Coursework Examples.

As part of our research, me and my group searched on Youtube for A-Grade examples of As Media films, done in other colleges, following the Horror genre, which we have also chosen to do: They all have similar conventions, themes, plots and the same sort of gritty look to the. Here they are:

Revised Plot Idea

After discussing potential opening discussions with my group, I have taken their suggestions added some back story and considered how the narrative will develop. I think this is important because once we know what the characters are doing, we can help explain this to the audience through the filming.

Plot of film
In the past a young girl is attacked by a would-be killer, she escapes, he is caught sent to prison and later escapes. He comes back to get his revenge, stalking and killing her family and friends, until the climax when they fight and only one survives.

I understand that this plot has some similarities to Prom Night, however when we film this, it will be different.

Opening Sequence
Opening shot-Girl tossing and turning in bed.
Group of girls dancing at college
Cut to man looking at pictures of girls, discarded underwear etc,
Cut back to dancing girls, performance ends,
Three girls go toilet, remainder of girls leave building.
Cut back to man (face unseen) looking at photo of main girl.
Man hears girls voices, leaves caretakers room (half seen dead body in background) and goes to lock main doors.
Cut to girls going to door, find it locked, angry expressions, lights begin to go out in the building, girls become agitated.
Cut to man walking out of dark (with knife in hand and mask over face) Shot reverse shot to the girls.

What the genre 'Horror' is!

First of all, as me and my group have chosen to do horror for our final production, I decided to find out some extra research on horror altogether.

Horror

The aim of a typical horror film is to scare people, create tension, also it aims to fear people but also fascinate them at the same time. Horror can be up tight and really scary, it can also be psychological, this makes you think, but can get you freaked out at the same time.

Early horror movies are largely based on classic literature of the gothic/horror genre, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. More recent horror films continue to exploit the monsters of literature. So as the years have gone on, horror movies have changed significantly, now they are more about freaking people out and really scaring them....'Saw' films are a good example of this, even 'Paranormal Activity' these are the more up to date horrors.

Characters in a horror film usually have specific roles, the killer, they have their identification hidden or there is a twist along the lines. The victims are either male or females (blonde females) the children are innocent, if not, it is typical staff if the film is set in a work based setting. E.g. Hotel.

The style in a horror film is key, it has many features: Lighting is low key, Usually dark, Noises, Refletions, Low angle shots, Close Ups, Mid-Shots and many more.

Typical settings ofa horror film are: Hotels, Work Places, Forests, Woods, Schools, anywhere really, as long as it has its conventions etc it makes the horror good, also needs the themes and visual style to create these affects.

Knifes, Blood, Killings, Houses, Phone Calls, typical things to expect in a horror film.

Finally, the themes of a horror film are: Thriller, Viloence, Disgust, Comedy, Suspense

So overall, horror creates a big pack of tension and it wants to make people be facinated but also fear at the same time, unexpected things happen in horror films, this makes people want to carry on watching and not leave their seats. Some are made just to purely freak people out.
This research will help me and my group put some ideas together on how we can make our film production, look as much as a horror film as possible, we will use some of the techniques and conventions to help us gain in the project ahead.

Research

In order to do my AS Coursework, I had to look int a specific genre and look at examples and some of the genetic conventions of what is applied to this genre. The genre me and my group have chosen to do is horror. We have chosen to do horror because it is something we all agreed we would like to do, also we thought it would be the most interesting one to do.

We came up with 3 ideas for our final piece, a vampire film, a zombie film and a teen slasher. We thought about the use of facilities we would have to abtain to make the films and also the budget that applied to us, to make put to use for the special effects etc. From this, we could clearly chose one of our ideas and therefore we picked a teen slasher movie.

From research about a teen slasher movie, it would help us and give us a brief idea of how to make our final piece as best as possible. We found out some of the conventions you would expect:
  • Knifes
  • Teenagers
  • Masked killers
  • Ineffectionate adults
  • Point of view shots
  • Isolated areas
From doing the research, I watched the first 2-3 minutes of 'Scream' this is a Teen Slasher movie.
I took some screen grabs to show the conventions.
This is a typical feature you would expect in a film like this. The location is where the girl would feel safe and secure, also what is typical is that the house is isolated and the scene is set at night. Also, the girl is home alone in such a big house, this is typical in relation to a Teen Slasher.

This is another typical convention you would see featured in a Teen Slaher film, the use of knifes. It is an important shot, it shows Casey on the phone flirting with a male caller and this tells the audience that she might be promisqus. Which means that she might be a sinner. The fact that she's toying with the knife in phallic way reinforces the female sexuality. Knifes are key weapons in Slasher Movies and fans of this genre may expect to see that knife being used later in the film.
From seeing the opening of Scream, I can see that an isolated house and also the use of knifes and a girl left home alone with a mysterious man ringing her, I now know that these are ideas that can fit into my idea.

Camera, Equipment, etc. Getting to know the uses and how they work.

The Camera Equipment, as mentioned in my first Blog entry was difficult to get used to. We have already Practically set it up and played about testing out the different buttons on the Camera and adjusting the tri-pod so instead to day I tried a theory based approached by looking at pictures of the Camera and The Tri-pod with labelled descriptions of  all the different parts with what they are called and what they do. This will help us when we start filming our project as it will help us remember where everything is and what it is used for.

These were Very usefull and many of the names of the buttons and devices on the Tri-pod have been rememberd well by Myself and other group members due to these images... which will hopefully be usefull when filming.

Adobe Premiere Pro

After getting used to the Camera Equipment last week, experimenting with the different buttons and adjusting the tri-pod to various positions. It was decided this week that we become more familiar with the editing software Adobe Premier Pro; we did upload our footage but didn’t really start editing it last week.
So, today we used the capturing technique to select all of the footage we wanted and placed the clips onto the timeline in a logical order. We also learned how to trim the clips to the size we wanted them and how to render work together once we had made a change. The final part which we added to our footage was including titles to the sequence which showed what it was called and therefore gave a glimpse as to what it was about.
Overall I found this lesson enjoyable, slightly confusing learning how to use the software at first but once you begin to see your work beginning to look like a real story with a plot and good shots coming together it encourages you to carry on editing and making it look even better. However this wasn’t our best piece of work as we were still unsteady with the camera equipment, we did do a good job at covering most of our mishaps up with good editing used to cut parts out.
Here are some of the Technical words associated with camera work and editing I learnt in today’s lesson, I have placed them on Bold above, they are:

1.       Capture
2.       Footage
3.       Clips
4.       Timeline
5.       Render
6.       Trim
7.       Titles
8.       Sequence.

Preliminary Screen Grab shots.

The screen grabs I am about to upload, are images of my fully edited piece of preliminary work.
This is a low angle shot of 'Lucy' this shows that she is important.

This is a medium close-up shot.

This is an over the shoulder shot.

This is another over the shoulder shot, however, this links with the other over the shoulder shot as it is a shot-reverse-shot, to show the link between the two characters.

Starting As Media Coursework

I am starting my work on the AS Foundation Production. The goal I am working to, is to create an opening sequence of a fictional film., lasting two minutes or so long.

Before we start the filming on the main exercise, we have to complete an intial exercise in continuity editing. We have to film a sequence involving a character walking down stairs and into a cafe, then they sit down and have a conversation with the other person, by exchanging two lines of dialogue. This has to demonstrate continuity editing, especially match on action and the use of shot-reverse shot techniques.

We shot this footage two days ago. We started to get grips with Mini-DV Camcorders and tripods. Today we are having a go at digital video editing and using Adobe Premier Pro.

I found the process to be interesting. It was good to have a go at using the technology of recording our own little clip and hopefully, I can improve my efforts from this and improve by putting this experience into my main project.
