Evaluation-What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A media institution is a company that will distribute someone's film. Universal, Working Title, Warp and 20th Century Fox are all examples of companies around.
The studio/company I think my film production would fit into would be Warp. I think it would fit into Warp because the film we have produced is not a high budget and it is a very low budget film. Therefore it would fit best with the Warp Studio. Also I would recommend our film production to be in the Warp company because the film we have produced is a little gritty. It's not going to be the most successful film therefore it would fit into one of the lower companies, however, companies like Universal, where they are far more successful and they make their films out more world wide to the public and therefore they have bigger success, however they can afford to do this, therefore they can spend more money on their films and publish it to a wider range, therefore this is why big film companies make better films, which leads to more profit, therefore our film production would not be as successful in this company. Theres not enough effects to make the film of high standards etc. So therefore, I would choose Warp Studio other than any other studio company.

Examples of Warp Films
  • Four Lions
  • This Is England
  • Hush
  • Paradise Lost
  • Submarine
These 5 films are all Warp Films, out of these 5 films I have only heard of two of them (Four Lions, This Is England) the others I haven't heard of. This goes to show that these kind of films from this company are not big named films and not everyone knows about them, they are typical standard films and don't really bring in any great profit, some may do so, some might equal the budget they spent on making the film. Warp isn't the best of companies and this is why I think our film production(Infidelity) would fit into this film industry company.

Evaluation- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In this production, the genre is horror and the main story line in the film is the fact that a boy has cheated on his girlfriend. So what was decided to do is a typical cheating based horror. As most young people are most commonly known to cheat. This film is casted by 17-19 year olds. Therefore, this must attract teenagers of this age to watch the opening of this film we have produced.
This film is to help show that being a teenager is just like the adult life, even though they are still young, they have to deal with adult situations at a young age, is this showing that teenagers are growing up too fast and are having to make decisions early on in life. However, there is no importance shown to this as they are still young.
Melissa who plays the killer, doesn't like cheats, therefore she fits into the part of the killer. Also, Laura has experienced being cheated on, therefore it makes it easier for her to understand her part in the film, a lot easier to play. From the actors/actresses who played the parts, having them having the same views and similarities to this storyline,it helps play the parts correct.
Also in this production, it is a girl that gets cheated on by her boyfriend and her heart is broken, this is a typical thing to real life that the boy has cheated on his girlfriend. It is more likely a boy to cheat than a girl. Therefore we have made a girl be cheated on in our film production.

In horror/slasher movies you intend to start the film with a typical girl at the start, for example 'Scream' a 'Real' media institution has at the beginning of the film a girl is home alone, also the girl is a teenager. 'Scream' represents teenage girls to be useless and clumsy, whereas in our production, we wanted the girl not to be this and we wanted her to be the opposite from this where she can be able to defend herself. 'Scream' itself was released in 1996 whereas to our film production it is released in 2011, from then to now we wanted to show that women can go from being clumsy and defenceless in a horror film, to being able to defend themselves and be a lot stronger.

Evaluation- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The title of the film is introduced at the end of the footage we have put together. The font of the writing of the title is made to show some kind of conotation to the horror genre which our film product represents. Many horror films have the title in their film with font that has some kind of connotation to the genre horror.

Setting/Location

The main setting/location of the film is in the Forrest. The reason why this location was chosen is because it creates the atmosphere as the forrest can be seen as creepy etc. This helps build the tension as you are watching the film and it indicates to the audience that something could happen. There could of been other locations used to help fit into the genre that we are obtaining. However, the Forrest is something not commonly used for horror films and therefore it gives the audience a different prospective of what horror films can be made like.

Costumes and Props

Every film has costumes and porps, therefore this is a typical media convention. In our product, you can see that there is a 'cheatboard' this is what is used to show that Melissa (The girl that gets cheated on) has been stalking her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend. Also, their is knifes used, this shows some of the conotations and mise-en-scene, this shows weapons, typical weapons that appear in a horror film. The actors are dressed in casual clothes. They are dressed in casual clothes to show that they are just normal casual people, like a real life person. This isn't really a costume, its just the casual day look, however, still acts as a costume.

Camerawork and editing

In this product we have made a few different range of shots, close-ups, mid-shots etc. When editing the footage, we fade some of the shots into other shots, this creates the effects and also shows our editing techniques. Shots like these are used in a real film, so we took some ideas when watching films on our research and decided to use them to make it affective. The fading shots shows the use of our editing and also you can see the the different range of shots used throughout the film. (will be posted on as a later date)

Story and How the opening sets it up

In the film production, it is about where a girl gets cheated on by her boyfriend and then the girl that gets cheated on, she stalks her ex-boyfriend(the one that cheated on her) and his girlfriend, then the girl goes on to kill the new girlfriend to get revenge. The opening sets this up as it begins with the cheatboard, this shows all the stalking the girl has done to her ex-boyfriend and new girlfriend, then it goes to shots of her getting ready to go out and find them, so therefore, the cheatboard shows who the main characters are throughout the opening.

Genre and How the opening suggests it

The genre of the film production we have made is horror. In the opening of the film, you can tell that the genre is horror, as the music of the film is a creepy music and is a conotation to the genre horror. Also in the film opening, you see knifes, this is a typical prop in a horror film and therefore suggests that the film has something to do with horror.

How characters are introduced

In the film production all the characters are introduced seemingly. At the beginning of theproduction, the new girlfriend and the ex-boyfriend are introduced on the cheatboard, this is because they are the main characters to the beginning, then seconds after they are introduced, so is the girl that got cheated on. All the characters are introduced fairly quick to the film, this is so the audience can get quick views of every character in the production.

Special Fx

We didn't really use any special fx. We made the whole film in black and white, which is just an effect. Green screen can help to make special fx, but we didn't really have any real good effects in our final production. Special fx effects would be most commonly used in scifi and action films etc.

Editing-Coming to an end.

From all the footage that has been captured, we have finally edited the footage and alsmost completed our final project. Here is some more edited footage:

This is Melissa-(Killer) Here, you can see on the left is the non-edited shot of her putting the lipstick on, however to the right of that is the final edited shot of it, it is in black in white, this is to create the tension. Also in this shot, it is a close up to show the gender of the girl and also, whilst this shot is playing in the film, as she is putting on the lipstick, it is in slow motion, this builds the tension and creates the atmosphere.

Here is another screen grab from the editing we have done. On the left of the picture is the first shot of the dead body, however on the right side of the picture is the edited shot and is the final piece that will be included in the film. As you can see it is in black and white, this is throughout all the film and keeps tension going all the way. As you can see, the word 'Destroyed' is in the background of the dead body, this shows that the word represents what the dead body is, its destroyed, the girl is dead and this goes along with the conventions of the shot.

Equipment.

These are pictures to show the equipment we have been using througout our Media Coursework Project.

This is the keyboard we use to help edit pieces of footage we have filmed. This is different to a normal keyboard and it is our first time experiencing one of these kinds.

This is the computer we have been using to edit all the footage we have filmed. All our project is on this compuer and it has been our first time using these, so we have no experience at all. It takes time to get used to, but we manage in the end to get used to it.
This is the camcorder we used to film all of our footage with for the opening to the film we are making.
